The Signatory Story

1980

Andrew Symington

Signatory's story begins in Edinburgh, where Andrew Symington developed a passion for single malt whisky while working at the prestigious Prestonfield House Hotel. Surrounded by some of the most influential names in Scotch whisky, Andrew discovered the nuance and individuality of single cask expressions.

1988

Signatory is Founded

In 1988, Andrew and his brother founded Signatory Vintage Scotch Whisky. Initially, the thought was that each bottle would be "signed" by a notable figure, hence the name. Though the signature concept was short-lived, the name stuck. The first bottling. a 1968 Glenlivet, sold out quickly, and as the company grew, Andrew invested in a semi-automated bottling line. Shortly after, Andrew bought out his brother and took full ownership of the company.

2002-2017

Edradour Expansion

In 2002, Andrew acquired the Edradour Distiller, one of Scotland's smallest distilleries, from Pernod Ricard. This marked a new era, as Edradour became the home of Signatory. By 2007, operations had entirely relocated to Edradour's scenic site in Pitlochry. Soon after, Andrew introduced the heavily-peated Ballechin whisky. Over the following years, he added warehousing for over 20,000 casks and expanded distillery production.
